Sous un Ciel en Couleurs

I was a little afraid of 31.
But not as much as 30!
It feels encouraging and promising, somehow.

Of course I wish Peter was there with me because he's my favourite person in the whole world but all the other people around me made my day feel so fun and worth celebrating.
I asked my students and colleagues at work and my family in-law during dinner to write me a little note in a diary I brought and to take a picture with me, it was so much fun. I'm going to print all the photos and stick them next to their messages. I'm lucky to know people from all around the world and so messages in different languages.
At work, I brought little raspberry and nectarine pies and they were a success.

Peter's parents surprised me: they were taking me to the restaurant and Peter's brother and his girlfriend were there too. It was so nice celebrating my birthday with them.
31 really feels nice and memorable. I hope more lovely surprises/changes are coming my way, I'm so ready for this year ahead!

Emi and I went to a little cozy place called Le Pain Quotidien for breakfast today.

It was really nice and there was so much light and the people around us were happy and taking their time to enjoy their own breakfast. It was really lovely to spend some time with Emi there.

I think I'm not taking enough time to enjoy life lately and it kinda scares me but doing this little rendez-vous impromptu with Emi made me realize how things can be so easy and that you don't really have to go very far or do something so very special to enjoy every minute of what you have.

Today BabyLuv and I went out for lunch with Emi and I wanted to finish on a sweet note so after taking a little walk around town, we headed to MAX, where you're supposed to eat the most delicious waffles of Ghent.

IMG_3911

Even though I enjoyed being with my two best friends, I have to say that I was not impressed by the waffle. I was kinda disappointed to tell you the truth: it didn't really taste anything and this kind of sugar is not really my favorite. I was actually more impressed byt the new 'sheep house' and the decoration of the restaurant.

Emi got a new hair cut and it looks so lovely. I love how it's new and trendy and different.
Peter actually had his hair done too. Now it's my turn...

Day 10:  If you could only live off of one food and beverage for the rest of your days, what would they be?

Easy peasy: mashed potatoes and water. Hmm maybe tea for the different flavours...

StrawberriesIt's funny because I've never been a huge fan of strawberries but since I take pictures of my food, I love them!
I'm not going to eat them everyday but I know they're on my yummy list now. And since I'm having allergic reactions to almost all of my favorites fruits, I won't say no to one I'm not allergic to. I just wish they'd stop using all those bad products on food, it's not healthy at all.

I'm thinking about growing my own vegetables but I need to find a piece of land/garden where I could do that. My Mom is an expert at gardening and she has a huge garden filled with beautiful flowers and lots of fruits and vegetables (zucchinis, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, salads, radishes, strawberries, cherries, quinces, etc.). I'm not as good as her and I think my big sis' got that talent from her as well, but I guess that if I put my mind really into it, it'll work out.
I should maybe start with a few easy vegetables and herbs on my balcony. I'm pretty sure I could grow carrots and radishes easily. I need to put that on my to-do list for next year because I know now is too late to start planting now.

Today I woke  up early to prepare one of my favorite Belgian dish: stoofvless (or stoverij).
It's a meat dish with lots of onions, herbs and beer. It's kinda the same recipe as boeuf bourguignon, but instead of red wine, they use brown beer. It's lighter and tastes way better, to my personal opinion.

Since BabyLuv ordered so much meat, I decided to bring some to my young student today: last week, he almost fainted because he got sick and I'm pretty sure it's because he's not getting enough food in his system. He works pretty hard during the afternoon and in the mornings, he's with us, speaking a foreign language. That's pretty consuming!

Untitled

He welcomed it with eager and finished the whole plate in a minute. I'm really glad he liked it since I'm still new to the process and the well-cooking of this recipe. It's funny the effect food has on people: it's like all of a sudden any traces of stress, boredom or anger flies away. I ache for those who can't have enough every day...

Untitled

p.s. My student is getting enough food from his family: he's just a teen who doesn't really care if he eats or not during the day. I just wanted to treat him with some homemade dish so I was sure he got something before heading to work.

My friend Emi gave me some tea a few weeks ago and I just love it. I knew it reminded me of something but I couldn't quite put my hands on it. But tonight it finally hit me: it reminds me of the oatmeal I used to eat all the time when I was an AuPair in the USA.
It's called cinnamon & spice from Quaker Oatmeal. I wish I could find it here, I loved the taste and that it was in portion which were the right amount I needed to start the day.
Maybe I should buy some plain oatmeal and spice it up myself... I'll probably try that. Yay!

Emi gave us a gift card on Thanksgiving for a homemade brownie.
BabyLuv and I LOVE chocolate and everything that is homemade, so Emi's gift was just perfect. We set a date on a lazy Saturday to go to her place and as soon as we arrived we could smell the delicious smell of cooking brownie. That was heaven already!
Emi also made some vanilla ice-cream. I just couldn't believe how good she was treating us: vanilla ice-cream is my very favorite!

Thank you so much Emi, for having us and preparing us one of the best homemade brownie we've ever had.

We tried to wake up early this morning but we stayed in bed longer than we wanted. We had a big breakfast (at least I did, thinking we wouldn't eat for lunch like yesterday).
IMG_5075
IMG_5070IMG_5074
Then we went to the spa and it was really nice to be able to breathe properly again.
We had to give our room back at noon so we did and then we wanted to go get the sightseeing bus but we didn't find the stop and walked all the way across the Rhine to the station. It was a beautiful walk, the sun was shining high even though it was chilly, we saw  parts of the city that we wouldn't have seen if we took the bus then.

IMG_5174
We still had 4 hours to kill so we put our luggages in a safe at the station, I got a chai tea latte from Starbucks and we looked for the bus tour. The driver was really funny and nice.
IMG_5246
The ride wasn't really good: it's not too comfortable (if you have back problems, I don't recommend it) and you don't see as much as you'd like but we were happy to be able to know more about the city. We had some big laughs in the bus looking at the people who were sleeping or hearing what they said. I love the picture of Peter laughing, it's my favorite!

After the bus ride, we got our luggages back but still had 1 hour so we went to grab some lunch at a brasserie: at first you'd think it's really tiny because of the doors and when you enter, it's like a whole new universe! It was so huge and so long, I couldn't believe it. the decorations were really pretty.

We had a yummy lunch (I couldn't finish, obviously with the breakfast I had) and we were happy and full when we boarded the train. I had a little time to buy some postcards too.
IMG_8502
Overall this trip was really nice and fun and relaxing. I really recommend visiting Cologne and I hope you'll have as much fun as we did.
